Apple Music Launches “Sound Therapy” to Help Users Focus, Relax, and Sleep
In an increasingly fast-paced digital world, Apple Music is introducing a new audio wellness feature called Sound Therapy, designed to help listeners focus, relax, and sleep. The initiative, created in collaboration with Universal Music Group (UMG), turns familiar songs into immersive audio experiences by blending them with therapeutic sound waves.
Unlike traditional playlists, Sound Therapy songs are engineered to incorporate elements like auditory beats and colored noise—types of sound waves where intensity varies across frequencies and are categorized by color. Each type of noise is carefully matched with neural frequencies to support specific mental states.
For example, the Sleep category melds pink noise—a soft background sound resembling rainfall or wind—with delta waves, known to promote deep, restorative sleep. The Focus selection employs gamma auditory beats layered with white noise, aiming to enhance concentration and cognitive function. Meanwhile, the Relax playlist uses theta waves, commonly associated with calmness and meditative states.
“Combining proven neural acoustics with mainstream music creates an accessible form of modern therapy, tailored for today’s streaming habits,” said no named source, though the strategy appears rooted in growing consumer demand for mindful listening experiences.
The Sound Therapy collection includes modified versions of popular songs by artists such as Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Ludovico Einaudi, AURORA, Jhené Aiko, Chelsea Cutler, and Jeremy Zucker. These tracks have been turned into long-form, instrumental soundscapes, crafted by producers at Sollos, UMG’s music wellness venture based in London.
This innovation complements Apple Music’s broader push into audio wellness with offerings like the Apple Music Chill radio station, a curated stream that mixes laid-back music with soothing narrations and mindfulness prompts.
By integrating scientifically-backed sound design with chart-topping music, Apple aims to position Sound Therapy as more than just aesthetic—it’s a step into functional music designed for real-world benefits, catering to users seeking calm in everyday chaos.
